Contract Sleep System Purchase Considerations (11 Questions)

Q. Are there ways to test the quality of a sleep system?
A. There are four sleep system tests that are endorsed by ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials). Request the results of these tests from any sleep system manufacturer from whom you are considering a purchase (the unit should be tested as a set - mattress and box spring):

  1. Repetitive Impact Durability Test (Cornell)
  2. Load Deflection Analyzer
  3. Impact Drop Test
  4. ASTM Hexagonal Roller Test (Rollator)

Q. How do I compare today's bedding to find the best mattress for our property's needs?
A. The best way to make a decision is to look at a top quality pillowtop, then firm, then plush sleep set. Determine the comfort level desired for your property, then compare your comfort preference in three qualities of sleep sets - top of the line, mid-range, lower range, and understand the differences of these price points. This comparison helps you make an informed decision. Know the type of sleep set and its significant features such as the type of innerspring unit, key comfort layers, type of edge support and significant features of the box spring.

Q. Is coil count important in determining sleep system quality?
A. Coil count is a frequently-used and readily understood specification in sleep system selection. However, there are many elements in innerspring construction that interact with one another in a dynamic balance of flexibility and support to achieve overall mattress performance and deliver lasting sleep comfort. These include:

  1. Coil design, shape and height
  2. Number of turns
  3. Steel gauge and strength tempering
  4. Cross lacing method

Q. Should I be concerned about bedding height?
A. A current trend in the hospitality industry is toward higher profile beds; height enhances room design. To make the bed a focal point of the room, Sealy Contract recommends using their 9" Shock Abzzorber Plus Box Spring, which comes standard on all new Sealy Posturepedic UniCased hospitality sleep systems.

For a more traditional look, properties can use the 7" version of the Sealy Contract Shock Abzzorber Plus Box Spring. For properties that don't want the extra height that comes with today's bedding, Sealy offers the 5 1/2" MicroTek Box Spring.

Regardless of the height option you select, you can be assured that the box spring support will be correct for the Sealy mattress you purchase.

Q. Should the box springs be replaced when purchasing new mattresses?
A. Yes! A good box spring is as important as a good mattress. It acts like a large shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear. And it contributes to comfort and support. Don't put a new mattress on an old box spring. An old box spring will cause the new mattress to wear unevenly and much more quickly. When selecting a mattress, purchase its companion box spring. The two are designed to work best together. Sealy engineers invented "box spring support" in the 1970s, and it sets the standard for today's bedding.

Q. What are the differences between Contract and Residential sleep systems?
A. Contract sleep systems are produced to withstand more rigorous use. They go through special testing to ensure that they will stand up to the demands of commercial applications.

There are also stricter fire retardancy code requirements for Contract sleep system internal upholstery and covers.

Q. What is important to look for when buying hospitality sleep systems?
A. The four most important components that affect the look and feel that your guests expect and appreciate in a sleep system are:

  1. Innerspring Coil Quality, Gauge, and Performance
  2. Foam Cushioning Layer Quality, Density and Thickness
  3. Edge Support System
  4. Box Spring construction

Q. Who can buy Sealy Contract sleep systems?
A. Sealy Contract sleep systems are designed for the specialized needs and heavy usage that occurs in commercial applications. They can be purchased by anyone in the hospitality industry, including:

  • Hotels / Motels
  • Bed & Breakfast Inns
  • Resorts
  • Timeshare Properties
  • Rental Properties

Other industries that can purchase Sealy Contract sleep systems include:

  • Healthcare Facilities
  • Not-for-profit Facilities
  • Fire Houses
  • Cruise Lines
  • School Dormitories
  • Military Bases
  • Government Agencies

Q. Why are some of today's beds so thick? The sheets don't fit!
A. Today's mattresses are manufactured with much more padding upholstery and comfort layers than before. Many consumers (who are also hospitality guests) prefer the plush and ultra-plush comfort that these thick mattresses provide. To accommodate the thick mattresses, you can purchase deep-pocketed sheets -- along with any sheet set that contains a 200 thread count.

Q. Why are there so many different quilting designs?
A. The quilting design on a Sealy mattress cover helps determine the firmness or plushness of the sleep surface. If a quilting design is small and close, the bed will tend to feel firmer; if the design is large and spread out, the bed will usually feel plusher. Remember - when purchasing a Sealy Posturepedic sleep set, you get the correct support regardless of comfort level or price.
